The Tonga Room Redux
Greg Quist

A tip of the cap to Bob Hunt CTG and SFTGG member since 1984

Good Morning Greg,

Your Tonga Room post brought to mind many Friday and Saturday evenings of my misspent youth.

You could spend the entire evening at the Fairmont Hotel.

And way too often,

I did.

Dinner,

w/a beautiful babe sharing your table

and a

beautiful view of the City and the Bay

at the Crown Room.

Enjoy that view,

the rest of the evening will be indoors listening to awesome sounds.

After Dinner,

Drinks and music and dancing

at the Tonga Room.

Then,

more music,

more drinks,

and more dancing,

at the

New Orleans Room.

Then,

The,

“ Piece De Resistance “ ,

The Pop, or, Rock, star singer

at the

Venetian Room.

And headliner stars they were.

And of course,

More Drinks!

Look to your right or left,

Local political luminaries were all around.

Former or current

Mayors,

Robinson,

Christopher,

Shelly,

Alioto,

Moscone,

Jordan,

And of course,

Willie Brown!

George Shultz and his beautiful Charlotte.

Occasionally

Gordon and his beautiful Ann Getty.

Occasionally,

Gavin and Kimberly.

And don’t forget the occasional

State Senator and State Assembly members.

Also,

various

SF Board of Supervisors members.

Wilkes Bashford to see his finery on display.

Stanlee Gatti to check on his decorations and party favors/table settings.

And Herb Caen to record the event.

Now it’s about

1:00: or 1:30: am,

And you are way too drunk to drive home.

Who Cares!

Your auto is safely parked for the night in the Fairmont Garage.

You check in for the night at the Fairmont.

You’re Drunk,

You’re Young,

w/money in your pocket,

and credit cards in your wallet.

You’re full of rum and other good spirits.

You’re w/a beautiful babe,

Living in the

best City,

San Francisco,

In the best State,

California,

in the best country on

Planet Earth,

the USA!

Life is Good!!

Yes Indeed,

to be young again!

However,

You’re young only once!

Alas,

Life Goes On!

All the best,

Bob

Indeed I am.
And I’m still vertical too!
And I’m determined to,
Stayin Alive,
just as long as I can.
And much thanks to the BG’s for that awesome wonderful song!

BTW,
If any of you happy travelers will be driving into SF from the Oakland/Berkeley/El Cerrito area to attend the
Spring SFTGG General Meeting, and you will have an extra seat available in your awesome automobile,
I could use a ride home to my palatial digs in
Berkeley, California.
It’s Alfred’s regular night off,
and I always let him have the Phantom on his off days.
That’s terribly nice of me,
don’t ya think?
Well that was fun,
wasn’t it!
The truth is that way more than once I’ve experienced some rather nasty unpleasantness on public transit after dark over the years and I don’t wish to put myself at risk again if I can avoid doing so.
Please let me know ASAP about a ride back to Berkeley.

I’ll close w/a lovely calming musical suggestion,
one of my favorites.
“ Water “ ,
by the
Sons of the Pioneers.
You can find it very easily on YouTube.

All the best to all of you
Happy Travelers.
