A towering steel mesh statue of a naked woman has been lifted upright by crane at Embarcadero Plaza, where she will remain for six months.

The sculpture, which was unveiled Thursday night before hundreds of spectators, stands 45 feet tall and weighs 32,000 pounds. Her hair of woven cables reaches higher than the palm trees on either side and appears to be almost as tall as the famous clock tower behind her. At night she will be lit from within and an interior mechanism will be activated at random to cause her chest to rise and fall as if breathing.

As soon as she went up Tuesday, the artist, Marco Cochrane of Petaluma, had to decide whether to position her to look east toward the Ferry Building or west, up Market Street.

“She is meditating in the mountain pose, just being present in the moment,” he added.
