Most San Franciscans are likely familiar with Youmei Hou’s breathtaking artwork — even if they don’t realize it.
Two gigantic metal renderings of Yumei’s famed paper-cut portrayals of Chinese folklore greet tourists and locals moving in and out of Rose Pak Station, a subway stop that has served as one of the main gateways into Chinatown since it was built in 2022.
So it’s fitting that the work of Yumei — affectionately known to some as the “paper cut lady” — is also what welcomes visitors to the latest art exhibition in the historic neighborhood, which highlights the innovation and creativity of a group of pioneering Asian American artists in The City known as the “Hidden Dragons.”
