One of the nicest drives in The City is along The Embarcadero, starting at the ballpark and heading north towards the Ferry Building. As you wind your way in the direction of the Bay Bridge overhead, water is continually visible and small ferry boats glide by. Joggers chug along, taking in the view. Couples hold hands as they saunter down the boulevard. Seagulls hang lazily in the air.

Pier after pier passes by. A closer look reveals little activity at any of them. There is no shipping and no freighters; they sit unused.

That raises a question: What happened? Given the city’s shipping history and Mayor Daniel Lurie’s determination to lower San Francisco’s projected two-year, $876 million deficit, is there any chance for the once-prosperous maritime industry to return?
