Happy Holidays

It’s Christmas week, and like a lot of other urban pilgrims, I spent some time over the past few days searching San Francisco for that elusive holiday spirit.
It’s something we do every year — and it turns out Christmas in this city is like a holiday cake, a beautiful confection with fruit and nuts, sugar and spice, topped with a bit of sour cream. Sour cream for the holidays? Well, this is San Francisco. It’s complicated.
We went downtown, walked the quiet neighborhood streets, had a festive holiday lunch, paid our respects to the giant holiday tree and the menorah in Union Square, sent dozens of cards to distant friends, thought about a white Christmas celebrated only once, long ago and far away.
San Francisco’s holiday spirit is around, however sparse
